Bahamas Trip

My first bonefish!

No shoes...no shirt...no problem...

Actually skin cancer is not a joke so I did wear a shirt while on my recent trip to the Bahamas.

I had been planning this trip since last September with my good college friend, Drew Scrivner, and all expectations were exceeded upon stepping off the small propeller-driven aircraft and onto the sun baked soil of Long Island.

Sure we could of gone snorkeling...lay on the beach...or collect seashells. But, the only thing on our minds was fishing...fishing for bonefish.

Bonefish also known as "gray ghosts" live in inshore tropical waters, moving onto shallow mudflats to feed with the incoming tide, and retreat to deeper water as the tide subsides.

Our days were occupied with sun...tidal flats of gin clear water...and bonefish. I am also convinced that the world would be a better place if everyone listened reggae music.

March Steelhead Trip

Last weekend I joined a few friends on the Salmon River for three days full of good laughs, good times, and good fishing. Actually, the fishing wasn't that good but we were still able to find a few nice steelhead.

Deneki Outdoors

Deneki Outdoors operates fly fishing lodges in Alaska, British Columbia, Bahamas, and Southern Chile. They also write a blog that covers all sorts of topics related to fly fishing.

I've found their site to be very helpful as far as helping me prepare for my trip to the Bahamas.

Fly Time

I've been busy at the vise tying for my trip in April. At first I was under the impression that I would only be seeing bonefish. But now I've learned that permit, tarpon, and barracuda are also possibilities. I'm not going to lie...it was kind of nice only having to tie for one species of fish.

Here's what I'm filling my box with...

Size 6 and 8 Gotcha and Crazy Charlie flies with bead-chain eyes and a few with lead eyes. A row of Pink Puffs will also be in my box. Colors include different combination's of pink, tan, and white. I've been told to not dress them too thick and that long legs are a good addtion to the flies.

2 Months

This is what I'll be doing in exactly 2 months from today. Anyone else want to come with me? I prefer those of the female species who wear two-piece bikinis.

One Question for the World

Maybe it's just that the answer is a lot simpler than we may think.

Mary's Nipple Challenge

On January 29th, myself and two friends will be participating in a hike/ski challenge with proceeds being sent to the St. John's Medical Center Oncology Fund and will be earmarked for breast cancer patients. The Oncology Fund offers financial assistance to cancer patients, helping cover costs of prostheses, travel costs associated with radiation treatments, and housecleaning services for patients going through treatment.

The event will take place in Alta, Wyoming at the Grand Targhee ski resort. There is an out of bounds peak on the mountain range, aptly named Mary's Nipple, which we will hike 650 ft up and ski back down to the starting line to complete one lap. The complete loop is one mile in length. The competition will begin at noon and end at 3pm and the goal is to complete as many laps as possible in the three-hour time frame. The team goal is for each individual to be able to complete at least 3 laps. Donations can be made in either a flat sum or a $ per vertical foot donation.

All donations will need to be received by Friday, January 28th. Please call me at 540-454-4416 if interested in sponsoring our team in this cause.
